PARENT COACHING & FAMILY THERAPY

IN-PERSON THERAPY IN LITTLETON & VIRTUALLY ACROSS COLORADO

Are you feeling stressed and find yourself with little energy for your kids?

Frequently yelling and fighting with your family members?

Wondering if there is a better way to parent, but not sure where to start?

If you answered “yes”, you are probably looking for relief and tools to make parenting joyful. As a parent, you have constant worries and an endless “to do” list, and end up feeling drained. The pressures to raise a “perfect” family can make you feel like you will never be good enough.

Most parents feel this way, not knowing what to do, how to handle discipline, or how to raise happy, healthy children.

I have concrete tools to help with parenting. For several years I taught evidenced based parenting classes with great success, and worked with children and parents in school based programs and private practice.

In addition, I have immersed myself in parenting books and attended workshops to learn skills to end the power struggles and enjoy your family life.

As a mother myself, I can relate to the struggles of raising children and the worry of “doing it right.” Unfortunately, there is not a “one size fits all” for parenting, and no book specific to your child.

I believe you are the expert on your child, and combined with my real life experience and knowledge, we can work together to create a more peaceful home.

I specialize in providing education on child and teen development, parenting plans and interventions, and building strong attachments between caregivers and children. I help parents explore their own family of origin issues and the models of parenting that were set for them, finding what their parents did well that they want to keep and developing skills to provide more than what they were provided.

I use communication skills and conflict resolution to help parents work together to blend beliefs and values that will provide the best outcomes for children. In addition, I teach neuroscience and relationship needs of children to help you understand what is going on with your child when they have mood swings, meltdowns, and are defiant. This knowledge will help you to calm yourself so you can respond to your child in a caring manner.

I am here to help you build skills to have a meaningful family life. It feels wonderful to see parents say “it worked” when trying new ways with their children. I can see the stress melt away, coming off the shoulders and letting parents feel the joy they once wished for when starting a family.

My work is meaningful when parents have tears of joy that their relationship with their children feels stronger, happier, and fulfilling. I approach parents with a great deal of compassion, curiosity, and a sense of humor.

FREQUENLTY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • I work with all adults and youth aged 13 years old and up. I love supporting teens and caregivers during the ups and downs of teenage life, and creating a safe base for teens to come back to with their parents to feel loved, supported and encouraged to find their identities.

While I don't offer family therapy with youth under 13, I can still offer coaching with caregivers to identify their child's needs and how to best connect with and support their child.

  • Yes! Creating an overlap between couples therapy and parent coaching is my sweet spot!

Initial phases of therapy will focus on the couples relationship to establish connection and communication skills. Then we can weave in parent coaching around theme of roles, responsibilities, attachment needs, parenting philosophies, and models of the "dream" family life. These are the topics so many couples get stuck on in creating the family they hoped for.

I also offer parenting skills and insight for individuals coming to therapy to heal their relationship wounds (I see you inner child!). I support individuals in creating new paths of love and care for their children, and to end generational cycles of parenting that no longer serve you.

  • No, I do not offer classes. Parent coaching will occur within the tehrapy framework. I don't offer a class, but often recommend readings, podcasts or videos from leading experts in the field.

I don't adhere to a "one size fits all" model of parenting, and believe you know your child better than anyone else. I will work closely with you to understand your child and offer ideas and skills tailored to your family's needs.

  • Great question!

I draw upon my learning from many years working as a therapist in schools directly with youth (pre-K to High School), to teaching parenting courses, and from work with protective services.

The main lesson I learned in all those years was to identify needs of youth and offer support over and over again until something "clicked". And then when I found out what "clicked" I would do more of that until change occurred.

In my parent coaching, we will review what you have already tried, what has worked and didn't work, and collaboratively come up with new skills to balance nurturing and structure for your family. We may go through a few rounds of ideas that don't stick, and I'm always receptive to feedback, and will show up with new ideas to keep trying. Something will work eventually, we just need to weed out those that won't work!

  • While I do not work with children or youth individually, I am more than happy to offer referrals for colleagues who specialize in child and teen therapy.
